Jordan Obita has opened up about his debut for the Uganda Cranes, describing it as a proud and unforgettable experience despite the team’s 3-0 defeat to Cameroon in an international friendly played in Morocco.
The 31-year-old left-footed defender, who boasts over 400 professional appearances across England and Scotland, was handed a full 90 minutes by the Cranes technical team.
The match marked not just his first game for Uganda, but also his first time playing on the African continent.
“It was a great experience. My first time playing in Africa and against such a strong opponent,” Obita told FUFA.
“The climate was a bit of a shock, I won’t lie, but the evening kickoff helped. Despite the loss, we created some good chances and showed fight.”
Obita’s debut came after what FUFA described as months of quiet conversations between his agent and the national team’s coaching staff.
Born in England to a Ugandan father, he had been following Uganda’s international fixtures from afar and was quick to accept when the opportunity came.
“It’s a big honor to represent my dad’s country. My family was over the moon when they found out,” he said. “I called my dad as soon as I saw my name on the list—he was incredibly proud.”
Obita, who has played for clubs like Reading, Oxford United, and Hibernian, believes he can bring valuable experience to the Cranes’ squad as they prepare for AFCON 2025 and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
“We want to do well in AFCON and most importantly, qualify for the World Cup in America next year. That would be historic for Uganda. I want to be part of a team that is remembered.”
He also acknowledged how quickly he’s felt at home within the team.
“The squad is very good. A lot of the boys already know each other, but they’ve welcomed me very well. I’ve been enjoying the experience so far.”
Obita’s focus now is on building chemistry with his teammates and making a real impact in upcoming fixtures.
“I like to keep the ball, play possession football, and deliver crosses. It’s about building that understanding now so they know what to expect from me.”
