The Orlando Pirates have surprised the South African football scene by naming Abdeslam Ouaddou as their new head coach.
This decision, announced Monday, comes after widespread speculation that Rulani Mokwena would take the helm.
Ouaddou steps in for Jose Riveiro, who left for Egyptian giants Al Ahly after three successful seasons (July 2022 – May 2025) with the Buccaneers, securing three MTN8 trophies and two Nedbank Cup titles.
According to Pirates media officer Thandi Merafe, the club’s choice aligns with their strategy of finding “hidden diamonds.”
Speaking on South Africa’s Radio 2000, Merafe highlighted Ouaddou’s appeal, which became evident during a match against his former team, Marumo Gallants.
She praised his “behaviour when he’s under pressure, the attitude, and the professionalism,” describing him as a “professional and a gentleman of the game.”
Merafe emphasized the club’s “keen eye and an amazing ability to unearth talent and people that are perfect for the brand.”
She expressed confidence in Ouaddou, stating, “I’m happy with the announcement of the new coach… I’m sure everyone at the club is looking forward to working with him.”
