In a shock Club World Cup result, New Zealand’s amateur side Auckland City held Argentine giants Boca Juniors to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday.
Christian Gray’s second-half header secured the historic point for the part-time players, marking a significant upset in the tournament.
Despite facing a relentless attack from Boca Juniors, who unleashed 40 shots to Auckland’s three, the Kiwi side displayed incredible resilience.
Boca initially led through an unfortunate Nathan Garrow own goal in the 26th minute. However, Auckland found their moment of glory in the 52nd minute when Christian Gray, a teacher-in-training, headed home a corner from Jerson Lagos, sparking jubilant celebrations.
Following a weather delay, Boca Juniors pressed hard for a winner but Auckland City’s tenacious defense held firm, ensuring a memorable draw.
Gray expressed his joy, calling it “somewhat of a dream.”
This draw, Auckland City’s first positive result in the tournament since their 2014 semi-final appearance, stands as a testament to their unwavering effort against professional clubs.
