Liverpool have strengthened their squad with the £40 million signing of 21-year-old Hungarian international left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.
This latest acquisition brings the Reds’ summer transfer spending to approximately £170 million.
Kerkez has signed a five-year contract, becoming Liverpool’s third major addition this window, following attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz (£116m) and right-back Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m) from Bayer Leverkusen.
Hungary Under-21 keeper Armin Pecsi and future goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia (agreed last summer for £25m plus add-ons) also join the ranks.
“It’s a real honour… to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world,” Kerkez stated, expressing his excitement.
This marks Kerkez’s return to a European giant after a brief, non-playing stint at AC Milan as a teenager. He thrived at Dutch side AZ Alkmaar before joining Bournemouth in July 2023.
His gamble paid off, as he started all 38 Premier League games for the Cherries in 2024-25, helping them achieve a record 56 points.
Kerkez was a standout for Bournemouth, integral to their high-intensity play. He ranked second among Premier League full-backs for distance covered and third for sprints, also contributing eight goal involvements (two goals, six assists).
Pundits like Micah Richards and Nedum Onuoha have praised his performances, with Onuoha calling him “one of the best left-back prospects in the Premier League.”
His arrival casts doubt on the future of established left-back Andy Robertson. While Robertson has been a stalwart for Liverpool, Kerkez outperformed him in several key statistical areas last season.
Many believe Kerkez will challenge for a starting spot, potentially leading to Robertson or second-choice left-back Konstantinos Tsimikas seeking opportunities elsewhere.
