Uganda Gazelles star Mellissa Akullu has declared the team’s intent ahead of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket: they’re not just going to participate — they’re going to compete.
“We are going to the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket to really compete,” said Akullu as she appeared on NBS Sport. “We should improve that 7th place from 2023.”
Uganda made history in 2023 as they finished seventh in Kigali — their best-ever AfroBasket showing. But for Akullu and her teammates, that’s just the beginning.
The team, buoyed by a core of homegrown and diaspora talent, is targeting a deeper run, and perhaps a shot at the semifinals.
With coach Nicholas Natuhereza’s tactical mastery and dexterity, as well as the hunger from players like skipper Jane Asinde, Claire Lamunu, Paige Robinson, and Akullu herself, the Gazelles are looking sharper and more ambitious than ever.
The Gazelles will need to overcome some of the continent’s finest, but they’ve been there before: “We’ve grown in confidence. We know what we’re capable of,” added the 25-year-old.
With Akullu’s bold statement, the message is clear — Uganda is no longer content with being a surprise package. The Gazelles want respect, results, and clearly, a place among Africa’s elite.
