KCCA fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief, João Gabriel Esteves Cardoso is staying put.
With his contract running down and speculation swirling, the Brazilian looked set for the exit door.
Whispers even hinted at a shock switch to rivals Vipers SC. But on Friday, Gabriel squashed all the noise, putting pen to paper on a fresh two-year deal that keeps him at Lugogo until the end of the 2026/27 season.
“I’m happy to continue my journey with KCCA FC,” said the 23-year-old after signing.
“I’ve truly embraced the culture here and the passionate support from the fans.”
“Lugogo feels like home, and I’m eager to keep pushing for success with this team.”
Since arriving at the start of the 2023/24 campaign, Gabriel has shown flashes of brilliance, the kind that turns games, lifts crowds, and leaves defenders chasing shadows.
But his debut season was a stop-start affair. Injuries and inconsistent selection under former boss Abdallah Mubiru limited his minutes, leaving fans wanting more.
And when he did play, he made it count.
Four goals and three assists in just 10 Uganda Premier League appearances, plus another strike in the Uganda Cup, tell only part of the story.
Gabi, as he’s affectionately known, brings flair, imagination, and that samba touch that lights up Lugogo every time he steps on the pitch.
It’s no wonder he became a fan favorite in such a short span. Every cameo felt like a spark.
His name echoed from the stands. His exit rumors caused panic. But now, with the ink dry on a new contract, KCCA’s faithful can look forward to more magic.
In the post-Mubiru era, interim head coach Jackson Magera has shown trust in Gabriel, offering him a platform to express himself and flourish. That trust has now been solidified.
“João Gabriel is a player of exceptional talent,” said KCCA Co-head Coach Brian Ssenyondo.
“We’re delighted he’s committed to the club long-term. He’s going to be key in helping us chase silverware over the next few seasons.”
KCCA’s trophy drought has stretched to six years, far too long for a club of its stature.
But the ambition is clear. Last week, Ssenyondo and Magera signed two-year deals to lead the charge.
Gabriel’s renewal now adds more firepower to that vision.
Of course, eyes now turn to other stars whose futures hang in the balance, none more pressing than Usama Arafat.
But for now, there’s calm at Lugogo. The heartbeat of the wing is staying. The spark remains.
