Veteran defender Cesar Azpilicueta has left Atletico Madrid after two seasons, expressing disappointment at not winning any trophies with the club.
His contract expired today, with Atletico opting against an extension.
Azpilicueta, 35, joined Atletico in 2023 after a decorated career at Chelsea. He played 54 games but saw limited La Liga action last season, falling behind younger players.
In a farewell message, Azpilicueta thanked the club, teammates, and fans, acknowledging his “commitment, effort, and learning” during his time. While grateful for the experience, he expressed regret over the lack of silverware.
Approaching 36 in August, Azpilicueta is now a free agent.
He has reportedly ruled out a return to the Premier League out of respect for Chelsea, as he seeks a new club for the next chapter of his career.
