The opening day of Wimbledon 2025 saw a major upset as two-time semi-finalist and world number nine Daniil Medvedev was knocked out in the first round.
He lost 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 to unseeded Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, taking his frustration out on his racquet afterwards.
This marks Medvedev’s earliest exit in seven Wimbledon appearances. For the 64th-ranked Bonzi, 29, it’s his first-ever win against a top-10 opponent.
“I was surprised by his level,” Medvedev admitted. Bonzi called the win “special,” adding, “sometimes it is better to play those players in the first round, when anything can happen.”
Medvedev wasn’t the only seed to fall. Eighth seed Holger Rune lost a five-setter, and 24th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas retired due to a back injury. The 32nd seed, Matteo Berrettini, was also defeated.
Further drama unfolded as two men’s singles matches were suspended due to the curfew. German third seed Alexander Zverev and American fifth seed Taylor Fritz will both resume their first-round matches on Tuesday.
Despite the upsets, it was a strong start for British players. Emma Raducanu advanced, and qualifier Anton Matusevich also reached the second round, contributing to a record number of British wins on an opening day at Wimbledon.
