Chelsea Bolster Attack with Joao Pedro Signing

Chelsea have announced the £60 million signing of Brazilian forward Joao Pedro from Brighton.

This marks the 18th forward brought in under current ownership in just over three years, pushing their total spending on attackers to a staggering £560 million.

Pedro, 23, has signed an eight-year contract and is immediately available for Chelsea’s Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras on Saturday.

He previously scored 30 goals in 70 games for Brighton after joining them from Watford in 2023.

“Everyone knows this is a big club with a great history,” Pedro stated. “When you are a Chelsea player you must think one thing – win.”

Brighton’s head coach Fabian Hurzeler called it a “good move for all parties,” highlighting the financial return and Pedro’s opportunity for Champions League football and a Brazil national team spot.

Pedro joins an already crowded attacking lineup that includes Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, and Christopher Nkunku, among others.

Chelsea is also set to add English winger Jamie Gittens (20) for £55 million, and Brazilian prodigy Estevao Willian will arrive after the Club World Cup.

Pedro’s transfer pushes Chelsea’s total spending under current ownership to £1.32 billion across seven transfer windows, with a net spend of £1.07 billion. Over £560 million (43%) of this has been on attacking players.

Chelsea’s financial strategy involves signing young players to long contracts to spread costs. The club’s recent sale of their women’s team to parent company BlueCo for £198.7 million also provided financial flexibility, along with their participation in the Champions League and Club World Cup.

Former coach Edu Rubio believes Pedro is “exactly what Chelsea need.”

He praised Pedro’s Premier League experience, ability to link play, and physical presence, suggesting he offers a different dimension to the attack.

While acknowledging a question mark over his goal tally, Rubio pondered if he can become a “top player now that he is in a Champions League team.”
