France’s record goal-scorer, Olivier Giroud, has signed a one-year deal with Lille, marking his return to French football after a 13-year absence.
The 38-year-old striker joins after leaving MLS side LAFC, where he struggled to make an impact with five goals in 37 games.
Giroud expressed his excitement about coming home, stating, “It made perfect sense to return to Ligue 1… It’s a young and talented squad, which needs experienced players like me.”
His decorated career includes stints at Arsenal and Chelsea, winning multiple FA Cups, the Europa League, and the Champions League.
Giroud also helped Montpellier win the Ligue 1 title in 2012 and was part of France’s 2018 World Cup-winning squad.
He retired from international football last year with 57 goals in 137 appearances.
