Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jobe Bellingham will miss his team’s Club World Cup quarterfinal clash against brother Jude Bellingham’s Real Madrid.
The 19-year-old picked up his second tournament yellow card in Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Monterrey, a booking that will sideline him for the highly anticipated family face-off.
In a strange twist, both of Jobe’s yellow cards in the tournament have occurred in the 28th minute of the match.
His latest caution, for a foul on Nelson Deossa, mirrored his first booking against Ulsan HD.
Dortmund manager Niko Kovac confirmed Jobe’s disappointment, noting the young midfielder was “a little bit surprised” by the suspension.
While the Club World Cup dream is over for now, Kovac is confident the brothers will face each other in future competitions, perhaps even next season in the Champions League.
Jobe, who recently joined Dortmund from Sunderland, was substituted in the 55th minute against Monterrey to avoid a potential red card in what Kovac described as “intensive duels.”
The highly anticipated quarterfinal between Dortmund and Real Madrid, featuring Jude Bellingham, kicks off Saturday at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
