Nakawa East MP Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga has praised the work of Uganda’s sports federations and the National Council of Sports (NCS), saying their efforts are key to the rising success of local athletes.
Speaking at the Fortebet Real Stars Sports Awards held on Tuesday, Balimwezo highlighted the importance of regular competitions in uncovering and nurturing sports talent across the country.
“If the federations were not organizing active competitions, we wouldn’t have these athletes to celebrate today,” he said. “It is through consistent sporting activities that talent is identified, nurtured, and showcased.”
He commended the federations and NCS for ensuring that Ugandan athletes have platforms to shine both locally and on international stages.
But Balimwezo didn’t stop at praise. He called on the government to take sports more seriously, especially when it comes to developing youth talent.
“I strongly urge the government to intervene more deliberately, particularly in supporting youth talent development,” he said. “Sports is not just entertainment. It is a serious source of employment and income for many young Ugandans.”
With rising unemployment among youth, Balimwezo believes sports can be a game-changer.
“When you look at how many young people earn from sports, it’s clear that this sector is a goldmine for job creation. The government needs to prioritize it, just like other sectors,” he added.
The MP also congratulated all the athletes who were honoured at the Fortebet Real Stars Awards, saluting their effort and resilience.
“I congratulate the award winners for their excellent performances. Your commitment continues to inspire the nation and lift Uganda’s flag high,” Balimwezo said.
The monthly Fortebet Real Stars Awards celebrate Uganda’s top performers across various sports disciplines, recognising consistency and impact.
