Liverpool players past and present have shared emotional tributes following the death of forward Diogo Jota, who passed away in a car accident on 3 July at just 28 years old.
Jota, who joined Liverpool in 2020 and helped the team win multiple trophies including this season’s Premier League title, was remembered by teammates for his warmth, dedication, and joy both on and off the pitch.
Dominik Szoboszlai, who played a key role alongside Jota during the club’s 2024–25 title-winning campaign, said he was heartbroken.
“Words cannot describe how heartbroken and devastated we are,” he wrote on Instagram.
“Your smile, your love for the game will never be forgotten. We will miss you so much, but you will stay with us forever, on and off the pitch.”
Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino, who spent several seasons with Jota at Anfield, said it was an honour to share the pitch with him.
“It was a privilege and an honour to have known and lived such special moments alongside you,” Firmino posted. “When words fail, there are only inexpressible groans.”
Former Liverpool winger Sadio Mané kept his message simple but powerful, sharing a photo of the two together with a broken heart emoji.
Jota’s death has shocked the football world. Players from across Europe have joined in mourning the loss of a player known not just for his sharp finishing and tireless pressing, but for his quiet, positive presence in the dressing room.
