Manchester United have officially completed the signing of 17-year-old Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon, the club announced today.
Leon, who becomes United’s second summer acquisition, joins after a rapid ascent in his native country.
Just months ago, Leon was an unknown in Cerro Porteno’s Under-17 squad. However, an injury crisis led to his senior debut, where he scored the winning goal.
He continued to impress, earning player of the month honors. “This is what every kid dreams of. I invite you all to dream. I’m a dreamer,” Leon said of his swift rise.
Cerro Porteno president Juan Jose Zapag hailed Leon as “a left-back like no other.”
Despite interest from other European clubs like Arsenal and Manchester City, United’s long-term vision secured his signature.
Leon follows in the footsteps of Diego Gavilan, the first Paraguayan to play in the Premier League. Gavilan, who coached Leon, acknowledges the significant transition ahead for the youngster, emphasizing the need for time to adapt.
Off the pitch, Leon’s first priority is to build a house for his parents, reflecting his humble upbringing as the youngest of nine siblings.
He joined Cerro Porteno’s academy at age 12, developing into a versatile player with strong attacking instincts.
His former coach, Manolo Jimenez, who nurtured talents like Sergio Ramos, believes in Leon’s potential, likening his possible career to that of Marcelo or Patrice Evra.
