Uganda’s Halimah Nakaayi delivered another strong performance on the international stage, clocking 1:57.89 to take third place in a stacked women’s 800m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on Saturday night.
The 2019 world champion stayed composed throughout the high-tempo race, which was won by Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma in 1:57.10.
South Africa’s Prudence Sekgodiso pushed her all the way, finishing just behind in 1:57.16 — equalling her personal best.
Nakaayi, who has been steadily building momentum this season, timed her race well.
She kept pace with the leaders through the opening lap and maintained her form in the final 200m, holding off a chasing pack to secure the podium finish.
This latest result adds to her string of consistent performances in 2025 and shows she’s rounding into form with the World Championships in Tokyo just weeks away.
Meanwhile, Olympic champion Athing Mu made her long-awaited return to the 800m but faded late to finish tenth in 2:03.44, her first race over the distance in nearly a year.
