After years of near-misses and close calls, Meron Kyomugisha finally broke through with a well-earned victory at the Lira Ladies Open on Saturday, marking her first major win in Ugandan ladies golf.
The tournament, organized by the Lady Captain in partnership with the Uganda Ladies Golf Union, saw Meron finish with a total score of 244 over three rounds.
That was six shots clear of seasoned contenders Peace Kabasweka and Martha Babirye, who tied for second with identical scores of 250.
For Meron, the win ends a long spell of finishing second or third in major tournaments.
Speaking to NBS Sport after her triumph, she was visibly emotional but composed: “This is a special day for me. I’ve always gone for the victory, only to end up second or third. But this time, my putting was on. I wasn’t under pressure. I’ve played with Kabasweka and Martha so many times. I wasn’t shaken.”
Meron’s calm demeanor and sharp putting proved decisive over the three rounds, especially against a field that included Uganda’s top names in the women’s game.
