Uganda Cranes legend Denis Onyango has hinted at moving into coaching once he hangs up his gloves.
The veteran goalkeeper is currently serving as a co-goalkeeping coach for the Uganda Cranes CHAN team, which is preparing for the 2024 African Nations Championship set to begin on August 2.
Reflecting on his new role with the national team, Onyango said, “It’s a very good experience, and I thank the federation for the opportunity. It’s helping me build towards what I want to do in the future.”
He described the coaching experience as a learning opportunity for both himself and the goalkeepers in camp. “They are good, but there’s always room to learn and improve,” he added.
The CHAN team currently features four goalkeepers: Joel Mutakubwa, Cruspys Kusiima, Kiggundu Denis, and Hannington Ssebwalunyo.
In an interview with NBS Sport, Onyango also looked back on his time at the FIFA Club World Cup, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
He expressed hope that more Ugandan players and officials will one day get the chance to participate in such global tournaments.
Now 40, Onyango is set to spend another season with South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns, where he serves as the second-choice goalkeeper behind Ronwen Williams.
