Ole Werner was officially introduced as RB Leipzig’s new head coach on Wednesday, marking the first coaching appointment under Jürgen Klopp, Red Bull’s new head of global football.
Werner, 37, joined Leipzig in June after a successful stint with Werder Bremen, where he guided them back to the Bundesliga and steadily improved their league position.
His arrival follows a disappointing seventh-place finish for Leipzig last season, their worst since 2016, which saw the club miss out on European qualification and sack coach Marco Rose.
Werner emphasized his alignment with Klopp’s football philosophy. “I’ve spoken a lot with Jürgen Klopp,” Werner stated.
“We came very quickly to the same opinion about the style we want to play.” He added that he values different opinions but ultimately “goes his own way,” which he believes is why Leipzig brought him in.
Despite Leipzig’s past successes, including two German Cups and a Champions League semi-final, a Bundesliga title remains elusive. Werner acknowledged the high expectations.
“There’s pressure everywhere… There are high expectations, from everyone involved, from everyone in charge, but also from me. I’m used to that; it’s completely normal.”
With his proven track record of improving teams, Werner is now tasked with returning Leipzig to the top echelons of German football.
