A groundbreaking proposal could see AC Milan’s Serie A match against Como in February played in Perth, Australia, potentially marking the first European league fixture held abroad.
Italy’s football federation (FIGC) has given a “positive opinion” to the plan, aiming for a historic “trip” overseas for a league match.
However, the move faces a “complex authorization procedure,” requiring approval from FIFA, UEFA, Football Australia, and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
While current FIFA rules typically prohibit domestic league games abroad, the organization did establish a working group last year to review the matter.
Previous attempts by Spain’s La Liga to play matches in Miami were ultimately scrapped due to various oppositions.
The English Premier League has consistently stated it has no plans for overseas games.
