Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres is facing disciplinary action after failing to report for pre-season training, a move that Sporting president Frederico Varandas says complicates any potential transfer to Arsenal.
Arsenal has been actively pursuing Gyokeres, with sporting director Andrea Berta holding face-to-face talks with the player in Portugal.
The Gunners’ most recent offer is reportedly around €70 million (£60 million) including add-ons.
However, Varandas has maintained that there’s no “gentleman’s agreement” for that price, despite not demanding the full €100 million (£85 million) release clause.
Gyokeres, who scored an incredible 54 goals last season, has not publicly explained his absence. Varandas stated firmly that “no one is above the interests of the club,” adding that the situation could be resolved with “a hefty fine and an apology.”
He warned that attempts to pressure Sporting would only make the player’s departure “more complicated.”
The Swedish international has been a prolific scorer for Sporting, netting 97 goals in 102 matches and helping the club secure two league titles.
