A 26-member Ugandan team has been flagged off to compete at the 4th Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Under-18 and Under-20 Championships, which kick off on July 16 in Abeokuta, Nigeria.
The delegation, which departs early on Monday, includes 19 athletes—eight male and eleven female—alongside seven officials. Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) President Dominic Otucet will head the group.
During the flag-off ceremony held at the National Council of Sports (NCS) offices in Lugogo, Sarah Chelangat, the Acting Assistant General Secretary (Technical), expressed strong confidence in the young athletes.
“We have confidence in Team Uganda. They will win more medals. In April, we flagged off this same team to participate in the qualifiers in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and they returned with an impressive 29 medals—a record performance for Uganda,” Chelangat said.
The CAA Championships will feature some of Africa’s best up-and-coming track and field athletes.
It will also run alongside the Confederation of African Athletics Congress, a key meeting of the continent’s athletics leaders and stakeholders.
Uganda’s strong showing at the regional qualifiers has set high expectations ahead of this continental test.
