Gomba have fired head coach Simon Ddungu just weeks into the 2025 Masaza Cup, following a poor start to the campaign that’s left the five-time champions in trouble.
The decision was confirmed on Sunday evening, moments after Gomba’s third straight defeat, a disappointing result against Busujju.
In a statement, the Gomba Ssaza Football Committee blamed “unsatisfactory results and poor team performance” for the abrupt decision.
Ddungu’s departure comes after just four games in charge. Under his leadership, Gomba have managed only one win and suffered three defeats, putting them near the bottom of their group — an unthinkable position for one of the tournament’s most successful teams.
While the results were bad enough, insiders say the tension ran deeper. Disagreements behind the scenes, particularly around team selection and training methods, may have accelerated the fallout.
Hopes had been high when Ddungu took the job before this year’s tournament. He came in with promises of a fresh philosophy and attacking football, but Gomba’s displays on the pitch lacked cutting edge and cohesion.
Assistant coach Moses Kiberu is expected to step in temporarily as the club searches for a long-term solution.
With the group stage approaching its midpoint, time is running out for Gomba to save their season.
