The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) has elected Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet as its new President, a significant leadership change announced amidst the ongoing 2025 NBA 2K26 Summer League and fresh off the heels of the Rockets’ blockbuster trade for Kevin Durant.
VanVleet, a nine-year NBA veteran and 2019 NBA Champion, was chosen during the annual summer meeting of the Board of Player Representatives. His four-year term begins immediately, with outgoing President CJ McCollum transitioning to a mentorship role.
“It’s truly an honor to be elected as President of the NBPA by my peers,” VanVleet stated, emphasizing his commitment to advocating for players’ best interests.
His journey from undrafted player to NBA All-Star and his philanthropic work underscore his dedication.
McCollum, who steered the NBPA through key negotiations like the 2023 Collective Bargaining Agreement, expressed confidence in VanVleet, noting his earned respect and readiness for the role.
The new NBPA Executive Committee includes Grant Williams, Mason Plumlee, Jaylen Brown, Jaren Jackson Jr., Donovan Mitchell, Garrett Temple, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Gabe Vincent.
The leadership shift unfolds as the 2025 NBA 2K26 Summer League (July 10-20) showcases emerging talent, with standouts like Gabe Madsen, Patrick Baldwin Jr., Tre Johnson, and Alex Sarr impressing scouts.
