CHAN 2024: Masaza Cup Fans Praised as Model for National Football Events

By Daniel Muwonge

Airtel Uganda’s Public Relations Officer, David Birungi, has praised the unwavering passion of Masaza Cup supporters, calling them “one of the most vibrant sporting communities in the country.”

His remarks come as the tournament continues to pull large crowds and energize rural communities across Uganda.

Birungi said the Masaza Cup has grown into more than just a football tournament.

“We’ve seen fans fill up stadiums in remote areas, we’ve seen entire communities rally behind their counties,” he said.

“That spirit should inspire how we approach CHAN 2024. If we can channel that same energy, Uganda will host one of the most unforgettable football events on the continent.”

Airtel Uganda has been a long-time backer of the Masaza Cup, supporting its growth in organization, competitiveness, and visibility.

According to Birungi, Airtel’s involvement goes beyond money.

“It’s about being on the ground, reaching out to communities, building the sport at grassroots level, and mobilizing fans across the country,” he said.

He also emphasized the role of media and cultural connection in fueling the tournament’s impact, adding that social media, storytelling, and coverage have all played a major role in keeping the Masaza Cup alive and growing.

“Let’s not wait for talent to rise. Let’s nurture it at the roots,” Birungi said.

“The Masaza Cup is living proof that when we support our communities, the entire country benefits.”

He ended with a call to action for more corporate and government investment in grassroots sports.

“Our future football stars are not born at the top. They’re discovered in these kinds of tournaments,” he added.
