Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes believes this season will be “different” as the Gunners aim to end a five-year trophy drought.
After three consecutive Premier League runner-up finishes and recent semi-final exits in the Champions League and Carabao Cup, the team is determined to finally secure major silverware.
Manager Mikel Arteta’s side faced significant injury woes last season, impacting key attackers like Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Jesus.
However, this also provided opportunities for academy graduates Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri to shine.
“We all believe that we can win big titles,” Gabriel, 27, told BBC Sport, dismissing excuses and emphasizing belief in the team’s ability to improve.
Arsenal have been busy in the transfer market, adding significant depth and talent.
New signings include winger Noni Madueke, midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The club is also reportedly close to securing striker Viktor Gyokeres and defender Cristhian Mosquera.
Zubimendi, a highly-rated defensive midfielder, played a crucial role in Spain’s Euro 2024 final victory.
Norgaard brings experience, while Madueke offers versatility in attack. The anticipated arrival of Gyokeres, who scored an impressive 54 goals last season for Sporting, is expected to provide a major boost to the team’s scoring capabilities.
“The club is doing what is best… to bring the best players that can help us,” Gabriel remarked, expressing excitement about the new additions. “To be in the dispute for titles, you have to have the best players.”
Gabriel, who recently signed a contract extension until 2029, is recovering from a hamstring injury and is working towards being fit for the season’s start. He is confident about the club’s trajectory.
“I am here to win big titles and I do believe that this season will be different,” he affirmed. “We have let a couple of titles slip through our fingers recently… I have a lot of faith in that.”
Arsenal begin their Premier League season against Manchester United on Sunday, August 17, with high hopes for a successful campaign.
