Mandela National Stadium will come alive tomorrow, July 24, as Uganda’s top athletes battle it out in the closing rounds of the National Track and Field Championships.
Originally set to run over two days, the event has been trimmed to a single-day showdown due to a packed schedule at the stadium.
This final national championship offers athletes one last shot at collecting crucial qualification points ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.
Uganda Athletics Federation president Dominic Otucet emphasized just how vital this event is for athletes still chasing the qualifying mark.
“This national championship is very important for athletes who are close to getting qualification points for the World Championship in Tokyo,” Otucet told NBS Sport.
“Every athlete who becomes number one in any race gets 100 free points on top of what they already have.”
The date adjustment was made to allow for early preparations for the CHAN 2024 tournament, which also takes place at Namboole and kicks off on August 2.
The stadium is also gearing up to host a Rugby World Cup playoff between Namibia and the United Arab Emirates on Saturday.
