Just ten days out from the biggest-ever TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, Taifa Stars head coach Hemed ‘Morocco’ Suleiman is confident his team is poised to make history.
For Suleiman, this tournament is a “catalyst for long-term growth” and a crucial “proving ground for home-based players.”
Tanzania’s role as co-host has already spurred significant investment in infrastructure, with upgraded stadiums and training facilities ready for the August 2-30 event.
Suleiman sees this as a long-term benefit for Tanzanian football, inspiring young players and showcasing local talent.
The Taifa Stars are in a challenging group with Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Central African Republic, and Madagascar, but Suleiman insists his team is ready.
“We have great respect for all the teams,” he said, emphasizing thorough preparation and a focus on “consistency and focus” in every match.
His objective is twofold: short-term competitiveness and long-term development, using CHAN to identify talent for the 2027 AFCON, which Tanzania will also co-host.
Suleiman highlighted the squad’s strong defensive organization and the mental resilience of his players. The overwhelming support from fans in Dar es Salaam, including a rare unity between rival clubs Simba and Yanga, further boosts team morale.
With past CHAN appearances never progressing beyond the group stage, Suleiman is determined to break that cycle.
“We believe this is our best chance yet,” he declared, citing increased experience and the benefit of home support.
“Our aim is to go further than ever and make the nation proud.”
The coach also hopes strong performances will attract international opportunities for his players, shaping the future of Tanzanian football.
