Magogo: Football Deserves a Place in Uganda’s Economic Agenda

FUFA President Moses Magogo has urged the Ugandan Government to take the next big step in supporting sport by formally recognizing football as a socio-economic driver in the country.

Addressing guests at the CHAN 2024 launch, Magogo said FUFA has a dream that goes beyond goals and trophies.

“As FUFA, we have a dream and I thank the Government for being by our side,” he said. “We needed football to be seen as something more than a sport. That starts with hosting tournaments.”

He expressed appreciation for the role the Government has played in maintaining peace, stability, and building infrastructure, all of which have laid the foundation for Uganda to host international events like CHAN.

“The first things have been done—peace, stability, and the presence of infrastructure that enables Ugandans to move from one place to another.”

He also acknowledged the recent progress in legislation supporting sports. “We had a very old law but now a new law was enacted,” he said.

But Magogo believes more must be done to embed sport within Uganda’s development blueprint. “What is remaining is including sport as a socio-economic activity in the agenda,” he concluded.
