The US Open has confirmed 14 prominent pairings for its upcoming mixed doubles event, offering a substantial $1 million prize.
The announcement, however, reignites controversy surrounding the tournament’s decision to hold the mixed doubles as a standalone competition on August 19-20, preceding the main Grand Slam.
Organizers faced heavy criticism in February for the new format, with last year’s champions, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, calling it a “profound injustice” and a “pseudo-exhibition.” Despite their strong views, Errani and Vavassori have received a wildcard entry this year.
The confirmed roster features a star-studded lineup, including British number one Emma Raducanu partnering with five-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz as a wildcard entry.
Other notable pairings include Wimbledon singles champions Iga Swiatek with Casper Ruud, and Jannik Sinner with Emma Navarro (both direct entries). American tennis icon Venus Williams will also compete, teaming up with Reilly Opelka as a wildcard.
The event promises to be a battle of champions, with many top-10 singles players and Grand Slam winners among the confirmed teams.
