Uganda Police have pledged to maintain maximum security during the upcoming CHAN 2024 tournament, especially around the Group C games that will be hosted at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole.
Speaking to reporters at the Uganda Media Centre on Tuesday, Police spokesperson and Assistant Commissioner of Police Kituuma Rusoke said all agencies are on high alert to ensure safety for fans, players, and delegations.
“This is not just a football event. It’s a national moment that will attract international attention. But we’re prepared. Any criminal or disruptive behavior will be dealt with swiftly,” Rusoke warned.
The CHAN 2024 tournament kicks off on August 2, with the first Group C fixture set for August 4. Uganda will host several matches at the newly refurbished Namboole Stadium, drawing thousands of fans from across the continent.
Rusoke said a joint operation involving the Police, military, and intelligence agencies has already been rolled out. Security teams will cover stadium grounds, hotels, training bases, fan zones, and key travel routes. He also cautioned the public against any attempts to commit fraud or bypass entry protocols.
“There’ll be no room for ticket scams, impersonation, or fake passes. Surveillance systems are in place. Undercover officers will be everywhere. We’re ready, and we’re watching,” he emphasized.
The Police urged fans to follow stadium rules, cooperate with officers on duty, and report any suspicious activity.
Rusoke added that a safe and peaceful tournament will reflect well on Uganda as a host nation and help the Cranes focus on delivering results on the pitch.
