A pivotal Group B showdown is set for Sunday as Madagascar and Mauritania kick off their TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 campaign.
Both teams are seeking a crucial winning start in what is expected to be a competitive group.
Madagascar, fresh off their historic bronze-medal finish in 2022, is confident under coach Romuald Rakotondrabe.
The team, known as the Barea, aims to go even further this time. “We want to go as far as possible,” said captain Andriamirado Aro Hasina, “Our group is tough, and all teams are strong.”
Mauritania, aiming to re-establish their domestic football prowess, is led by Spanish coach Aritz López Garai. “Our goal is clear: to go as far as possible in the tournament,” he stated.
Captain Moulaye Ahmed Bessam emphasized the team’s focus, saying, “We’ve prepared well, and we’re here to win.”
The match, which marks the first time these two nations have met in the CHAN tournament, is expected to be a tactical battle with high-pressing, aggressive play from both sides.
With a five-team group, an opening win is essential to set the tone and boost qualification hopes for either side.
