Over 500 Kenyan athletes have registered for the 2025 Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon, set to take place on August 23 in Kasese, Uganda.
The influx marks a significant milestone for the event, which has steadily grown into a major regional attraction for both elite and recreational runners.
Now in its fourth year, the marathon continues to blend sport, tourism, and environmental awareness. The event offers four race categories: 42km, 21km, 10km, and 5km.
All routes promise breathtaking views of the Rwenzori Mountains and surrounding areas such as Buyindi, making the experience as scenic as it is competitive.
Amos Wekesa, the lead organizer, says the surge in Kenyan participation shows the growing cross-border appeal of the marathon.
“Athletes are not only coming to compete but to explore Uganda’s natural beauty,” said Wekesa. “Uganda has historically invested a lot in Kenya, and now through this marathon, we’re seeing Kenyans coming here and boosting our local economy.”
With runners from across East Africa expected, the 2025 edition aims to elevate Uganda’s reputation in both athletics and eco-tourism.
Organizers also hope the event will further support environmental conservation efforts and strengthen ties within the region.
