Reigning Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns kicked off their 2025-26 season with a surprising 1-1 draw against a disciplined Chippa United side at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.
Despite dominating possession, the Brazilians were unable to convert their control into a decisive victory, a testament to Chippa’s organized and counter-attacking strategy.
After a scoreless opening half hour, Sundowns’ forward Arthur Sales broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute. Following a slick one-two combination with Tashreeq Matthews, Sales slotted a low shot past Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to give his side the lead.
However, the defending champions failed to build on their momentum in the second half. This provided an opportunity for Chippa United to pounce, and they did just that in the 65th minute.
A blocked shot found its way to Khaya Mfecane, whose deflected effort bounced past Sundowns keeper Ronwen Williams to level the score. It was Chippa’s first goal against Sundowns since January 2023.
Nwabali later made a brilliant save to deny Themba Zwane from close range, securing a hard-earned point for the home team.
The champions of the last eight seasons will now look to rebound in their home opener on Tuesday against AmaZulu.
