Former Premier League referee David Coote has received an eight-week suspension from the Football Association (FA) for derogatory comments he made about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in a social media video.
The suspension is the latest in a series of sanctions for Coote, who admitted to an “aggravated breach” of FA rules for including a reference to Klopp’s nationality in the clip.
The video, filmed around July 2020, was leaked online in November 2024. Coote, who was sacked by the Premier League in December 2024, expressed “deep remorse” and called his comments “crass and inappropriate.”
In addition to the suspension, Coote must complete a mandatory education program.
He was previously banned by UEFA following a separate incident at Euro 2024 and had come out as gay in January, citing his mental health struggles.
