Uganda’s national youth Scrabble team has departed for Nairobi ahead of the African Youth Scrabble Championship (AYSC) and the President’s Cup, set for August 14 to 17.
The flag-off ceremony took place on Tuesday afternoon at the National Council of Sports, where officials urged the players to showcase discipline, skill, and resilience on the board.
The twin events will be staged at Briton International School and the Trademark Hotel, bringing together over 130 top youth players from seven African nations.
Uganda’s 30-player squad features some of the country’s brightest Scrabble talents, including six representatives from Gayaza Junior School, who will compete in the under-15 category.
Team officials expressed confidence in Uganda’s prospects, highlighting the players’ rigorous preparation and hunger to make a mark on the continental stage.
The President’s Cup will also feature elite players from Africa, the US, UK, and Australia, with a total prize fund of $32,000 (about sh114 million).
The AYSC is the largest youth Scrabble event in Africa, and Uganda will be looking to improve on its past performances as Nigeria — the defending champions — aim to retain their crown.
