Real Madrid kicked off their new La Liga season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Osasuna at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, a match that marked the debuts of several key summer signings.
The lone goal came from a Kylian Mbappe penalty in the 51st minute, securing the win for new boss Xabi Alonso in his first domestic match in charge.
The night belonged to the new faces, with England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold making his La Liga debut.
The summer signing from Liverpool, who had previously made five appearances for the club in the Fifa Club World Cup, was given a standing ovation when he was substituted in the 68th minute.
Mbappe, who was fouled in the box, calmly converted the spot-kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
Real Madrid, who finished second last season, were dominant throughout the match and had several opportunities to extend their lead, with new defender Dean Huijsen and Eder Militao both forcing saves from Sergio Herrera.
Other debuts included £43m left-back Alvaro Carreras, a recruit from Benfica, and teenage midfielder Franco Mastantuono, who joined from River Plate for £38.5m.
Osasuna’s evening was made more difficult when Abel Bretones was shown a red card in injury time for a foul on Goncalo Garcia.
