Mugumisa: Entebbe 7s a Landmark For Growth, Opportunity, And Community

Uganda Rugby Union Sevens Committee chairman Desire Mugumisa has called this weekend’s Plascon Entebbe 7s a landmark moment for the game, highlighting growth, opportunity, and community as the driving forces behind the tournament.

In his message ahead of the third stop of the 2025 Nile Special Rugby Sevens Series, Mugumisa said the event marks history as the first-ever sporting activity at Sai Pali Institute of Technology and Management in Kawuku.

The facility, five kilometres off the Entebbe Highway, will host twenty-four men’s and women’s teams over two days of action.

“The festivities begin on Friday when over 300 pupils from the Bwerenga community will be introduced to rugby for the very first time through our Legacy Program. These milestones are further evidence that our sport is, over and above competition, also about growth, opportunity, and community,” Mugumisa said.

The women’s competition features two pools, with Avengers, Walukuba Titans, Nile Rapids, and Ewes drawn in Pool A, while Thunderbirds, Black Pearls, She Wolves, and Panthers form Pool B.

In the men’s draw, Buffaloes, Rams, Gulu City Falcons, and Warriors are in Pool A; Walukuba Barbarians, KOBs, Elgon Wolves, and Kisubi Pacers are in Pool B; Rhinos, Pirates, Hippos, and Impis make up Pool C; while Mongers, Eagles, Heathens, and Jaguars complete Pool D.

The Kisubi Pacers were drafted in after Victoria Sharks, winners of last weekend’s Central Region 7s, opted out of this stop. Other invitational sides including Ewes, Panthers, Warriors, Impis, and Jaguars remain in place.

Mugumisa also saluted partners for their continued investment in the game. “This event would not be possible without the support of our valued partners – Nile Special, Rock Boom, MTN MoMo, NBS Sport, Uganda Tourism Board, Reproductive Health Uganda, and Sofascore. A special word of gratitude goes to Plascon Uganda, whose commitment to rugby in the Entebbe area has made this tournament a reality and a highlight on our calendar.”

As the series stands, Thunderbirds lead the women’s standings while Walukuba Barbarians sit top among the men.

Matches will be broadcast live on NBS Sport 2 via AfroMobile, with coverage running from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
