The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has announced a major financial commitment to the Uganda Premier League (UPL), pledging 2.5 billion shillings per season over the next four years under its new Competitions Development Programme (FCDP).
The initiative, approved by the FUFA Executive Committee, is designed to strengthen club football structures and ensure the league reaches self-sustaining levels within five years.
The funding will be managed through a newly created resource pool named “FUFA Goal,” which will finance both the UPL and other domestic competitions.
FUFA Communications Director Ahmed Hussein explained that the move follows resolutions from the Elective Assembly in Hoima in July, where delegates called for reforms to make football competitions more robust both on the pitch and financially.
“The idea is to reinstall a format for club football competitions systems that addresses the sporting and economic objectives. All these will enhance the quality of the football leagues,” Hussein said.
FUFA is expected to meet the UPL Board and club representatives on Tuesday, August 26, to outline how the 2.5 billion shillings will be allocated and monitored.
The Competitions Development Programme is one of FUFA’s most ambitious interventions yet, after changing the league format for next season.
