Manchester United’s crisis has deepened after a shocking Carabao Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby.
Manager Ruben Amorim admitted his team was “completely lost” in the 12-11 penalty shootout loss, which many are calling one of the worst results in the club’s history.
Trailing 2-0 early, United lacked intensity despite a lineup packed with high-priced players. While late goals forced a shootout, a missed opportunity by Matheus Cunha and a decisive save by Bryan Mbeumo sealed United’s fate.
Pundits were quick to criticize both the manager and his players.
Former United forward Dion Dublin said he would be “absolutely livid” with goalkeeper Andre Onana’s poor performance, while Chris Sutton called the defeat an “embarrassment” and questioned Amorim’s decision to make so many lineup changes.
The loss, combined with United’s disastrous 15th-place finish last season, has put immense pressure on Amorim, whose tactical rigidity and low win rate have come under fire.
The once-ambitious coach now faces an uphill battle to turn the club’s fortunes around.
