Onyango Returns as Put Names Cranes Squad for World Cup Qualifiers

Denis Onyango’s shock comeback to the Uganda Cranes has stirred mixed reactions among supporters as the national team prepares for crucial FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mozambique and Somalia at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Onyango, widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest goalkeepers, retired from international football in 2021 after over a decade of service.

His recall by head coach Paul Put in the 28-man squad for the upcoming fixtures has reignited debate about the direction of the team.

Some fans welcomed the move, pointing to his experience, leadership, and proven ability on the big stage.

Others, however, believe his return could block opportunities for younger goalkeepers who have been working to establish themselves.

Tukasingura Richard, a long-time Cranes supporter, said Onyango’s decision risked overshadowing the development of future talent.

“Onyango is a legend, but he is very old now and we have many young players competing to shine, and this decision might kill their morale. He could have kept his legendary status intact and focused on guiding the young keepers instead of competing with them,” he said.

The debate has highlighted the high stakes around Uganda’s qualifiers, where Onyango’s presence will draw added scrutiny.

Whether his return proves to be a masterstroke or a setback remains to be seen when the Cranes step onto the pitch at Namboole.
