West Ham United have agreed to a deal in excess of £40 million to sign Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
The 21-year-old has been granted permission to travel to London for a medical, and if the transfer is finalized, he will become the club’s third-biggest signing, behind Sebastien Haller and Lucas Paqueta.
This transfer is seen as a significant boost for West Ham manager Graham Potter, whose side has lost their first three matches of the season.
Southampton, meanwhile, stands to make a substantial profit on the £15 million they paid for the Portugal Under-21 international last summer.
Fernandes has played 46 times for Southampton, scoring four goals and providing seven assists.
In addition to Fernandes, West Ham is also reportedly close to signing Monaco midfielder Soungoutou Magassa, also 21, for a fee of around £17.3 million.
