In a stunning upset at the US Open, tennis legend Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez defeated reigning champions Lyudmyla Kichenok and her partner Ellen Perez in the first round of the women’s doubles.
The wildcard pairing of Williams, 45, and Fernandez, 22, fought back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to claim a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory.
The win marks Williams’ first Grand Slam victory in four years.
“She’s the best partner I’ve had outside of Serena,” Williams said of Fernandez.
