Romano Floriani Mussolini, the 22-year-old great-grandson of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, made a memorable debut in Italy’s top football league, Serie A, on Friday.
Playing for newly promoted Cremonese, the right-back came on with eight minutes remaining and helped secure a 3-2 victory over Sassuolo.
His crucial contribution came when he earned a penalty, which was converted by Manuel de Luca to score the winning goal.
The win sent Cremonese to the top of the Serie A table with two wins from two matches.
Floriani Mussolini, who is on loan from Lazio, expressed his excitement after the match, stating, “Too many things happened in too little time, I don’t think I’ll ever forget the night because I’ve always dreamed of making my debut in Serie A. My goal was to make a difference and I’m happy that I managed to do that.”
The player, who wears the number 22 shirt with the name ‘Romano’ on the back, has previously been on loan to Pescara and Juve Stabia.
His last name has drawn attention, but he has said he is “here to play football” and that his surname “bothers other people more than me.”
