Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put has revealed why he turned to Denis Onyango as he announced his squad for the September World Cup qualifiers.
Speaking at FUFA Complex, Put said Onyango’s return is about experience and leadership, qualities he believes the team needs at this stage.
“He helped out the goalkeepers in the CHAN team and I got the opportunity to meet and understand him,” Put said.
“He is very experienced, and being that he plays for Sundowns, we need that experience for the national team. Playing these two games will also help us prepare more for the AFCON tournament.”
Onyango, who last featured for the Cranes in 2021, is back in the 28-man squad that will face Mozambique on September 5 and Somalia on September 8 at Mandela National Stadium. Both matches start at 7:00 PM.
Put emphasized that Onyango’s influence will go beyond the pitch, especially for the younger players in the squad.
The Cranes will start residential training on Monday September 1st as they prepare for the games.
