Kenya’s Mercy Nyachama clinched the 74th Johnnie Walker Uganda Ladies Open title after defeating Tanzania’s Neema Olomi in a sudden-death playoff at Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club.
Both players finished tied on 230 strokes after three rounds, forcing a playoff on the par-3 hole eight as darkness fell. On the first attempt, Nyachama and Olomi matched each other with pars. On the second, Nyachama held her nerve to make par while Olomi bogeyed, sealing victory for the Kenyan.
Nyachama, a member of Njoro Country Club in Nakuru, had long sought a win in Uganda, falling short since 2017. She carded rounds of 78, 75, and 77 to stay in contention before edging Olomi, the overnight leader, who posted 73, 80, and 77.
Uganda’s three-time champion Martha Babirye finished third on 233, three shots off the pace, after a strong final round of 76. Kenya’s Ashley Awuor (234) placed fourth, while defending champion Iddy Madina Hussein of Tanzania settled for fifth on 242. Lugazi’s Winnie Musuya came sixth.
In the bronze category, Christine Abbo emerged champion with 154 gross across two rounds, ahead of Ruth Pamella Akello on 166.
The championship concluded with a prize-giving ceremony and dinner beside the 19th hole. Action in the Johnnie Walker Uganda Open series resumes on September 3 with the 84th Amateur Open at the same venue.
