After years of turning down invitations, Ikpeazu Karl Anthony Uchechukwu Mubiru has finally honored an Uganda Cranes call-up and is in Kampala ahead of the 2025 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Born in Harrow, England, to an Ugandan father and Nigerian mother, Ikpeazu has always had the option of representing three countries: England, Nigeria, and Uganda.
While England was never realistic, the striker was long believed to prefer Nigeria over the Cranes.
Former head coach Jonathan McKinstry first summoned him in March 2020, but Ikpeazu failed to show up.
Uganda’s attempts continued, even as Nigeria never extended an invitation.
This time, persistence has paid off. The St. Johnstone forward has reported to camp and could feature in Uganda’s crucial qualifiers against Mozambique and Somalia.
His club, St. Johnstone, marked the occasion with a congratulatory message via the club’s official website.
“Striker Uche Ikpeazu has earned a call-up to the Uganda squad for upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers… Congratulations, Uche!”
For many Uganda, Ikpeazu’s arrival feels like the end of a long wait.
With his presence in camp confirmed, the Cranes will hope his power and experience add a new edge to their attack.
