Grimsby Town have been fined £20,000 for fielding an ineligible player, Clarke Oduor, during their recent Carabao Cup victory over Manchester United.
The club, which self-reported the error, explained that Oduor’s registration was submitted just under two minutes past the deadline due to a computer problem.
The English Football League (EFL) acknowledged that Grimsby’s breach was not deliberate. As a result, the club must pay £10,000 immediately, with the remaining £10,000 suspended.
This decision follows precedent set in previous cases involving Liverpool, Accrington Stanley, and Sunderland, who were also fined for similar rule violations but not removed from the competition.
Manchester United has five business days to decide if it will appeal the decision.
