In a dramatic conclusion to the summer transfer window, striker Alexander Isak has completed a British-record £125 million move from Newcastle United to Liverpool.
The Swedish international, who had a tense public falling out with his former club, took to Instagram to thank Newcastle’s “amazing supporters” for an “unforgettable” three years.
Isak joined Newcastle in a £60 million deal in 2022 and scored 27 goals last season, helping the team win the Carabao Cup. However, he missed this season’s opening games and publicly stated that his relationship with the club couldn’t continue after he claimed “broken promises.”
Newcastle’s announcement of the transfer was a terse, 37-word statement, marking a sour end to a saga that began when Isak was left out of the team’s pre-season tour.
