Red Bull’s Max Verstappen clinched pole position for the Italian Grand Prix with the fastest lap in Formula 1 history, edging out Lando Norris in a thrilling qualifying session.
Verstappen’s record-breaking lap of 1 minute, 18.792 seconds at Monza was just 0.077 seconds faster than Norris’s best time. Oscar Piastri of McLaren qualified third.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were fourth and fifth, but Hamilton will start 10th due to a five-place grid penalty. This moves George Russell to fifth.
Both Verstappen and Norris expressed satisfaction with their performances, acknowledging the tight competition.
Verstappen commented that the car had been performing better all weekend, while Norris admitted to making a few mistakes but was happy with his second-place result.
