Joseph Cwinyaai produced a composed final round to claim the 2025 Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateurs Open Golf Championship, overturning a two-shot deficit to finish three strokes clear of Zambia’s Dominic Musonda at Lugazi Hills and Country Club.
Cwinyaai, captain of Uganda’s national team, closed with a total of 274, leaving Musonda second on 277.
The victory capped a steady charge from the home favourite, who had trailed the Zambian across the first three days but kept within striking distance.
Musonda entered the final round with a two-stroke lead but struggled to match his earlier form.
Cwinyaai capitalised, keeping his scorecard controlled on the par-71 course to edge ahead and never look back. The win denied Musonda a debut triumph in his first competitive appearance in Uganda, after he had led each of the opening three rounds.
Behind the leading pair, Abdul Kakeeto and Anthony Otukei tied for third on 287, while defending champion Joseph Reagan Akena, competing on his home course, finished fifth on 288. Derrick Musana was sixth at 289, followed by Rogers Eyoyo at 291.
Further down the board, Godfrey Kambale and Ibrahim Ssemakula shared eighth on 292, while Peter Tumusiime and Peter Mayende rounded out the top ten with matching scores of 295.
The victory adds to Cwinyaai’s growing profile as one of Uganda’s leading amateurs, and his composed play under pressure provided a fitting climax to a championship that had swung between him and Musonda across the opening three days.
